‘Alita: Battle Angel’ Producer Discusses Sequel Possibility Due to Fan Interest

Alita: Battle Angel, despite not being the biggest hit of 2019, has garnered a huge cult following from fans who view it as the first proper anime adaptation from Hollywood. Many loved the film so much that they are anxiously awaiting a possible sequel from director Robert Rodriguez and producer James Cameron. Fortunately, one of the film’s producers has stated that a sequel could be possible if fans demand for it.

In a recent interview, Jon Landau stated that fans should address the sequel to 20th Century Fox’s parent company Disney and ask for Alita to get a full on franchise treatment.  The downside is that, while Alita performed better than other anime movies, making about $404.8 million worldwide, it wasn’t as massive a success compared to the other big franchise films put out from Disney. While the interest is there, especially in the foreign market, it’s not a guarantee billion dollar hit in the vein of Star Wars, or even Avatar.

The interest for a sequel is certainly there not just because of Alita’s cult following, but also because its ending hinted at a potential sequel, with Edward Norton cameoing as the film’s primary antagonist. Landau stated that the interest  for a sequel was always there from Cameron and, with the ever growing streaming service, Landau suggested that Alita could make a splash on Disney+. He stated that “I think Jim and I love the opportunities that streaming and these other avenues of distribution are offering people today. And you know, we would love to get into those playgrounds and play in them, no matter what the title is.” So it’s likely that Alita fans could have a chance to witness another feature film on a streaming platform. It’s just a matter of time on whether or not Disney will officially green light the sequel.

Ryan Pineda: When it comes to film, animation, video games and other mediums, I can discuss for hours about how much on why certain films and animated media made me the person I am today. I adore the artistic merit that comes from a lot of pop-culture media and will definitely love to have a conversation about favorite movies any day! I have graduated in 2017 with a BA in Film and Television at the University of Arizona. Been passionate about writing about films due to always having an interesting outlook on the medium. Will always see a film and will definitely be sure to recommend it to someone that I know for a fact would love that movie. Not only that but will also give reasons for why I think that film did or did not work as a movie, and the same can go for other pieces of media like television, video games and especially animated projects.
