Sadly for her fans, Rosario Dawson will no longer be in Fox’s New Mutants. While she was attached to the film, it seems like she has left the project. Instead, actress Alice Braga (Elysium) will replace her as Dr. Cecilia Reyes. Though there is no currently available reason as to why Dawson has decided to exit the project, it seems like everything else is still on track and that the role is in good hands.
Braga’s character will serve as a doctor and mentor; however, she too has abilities which she likes to keep under the radar: namely, creating a bio-field that can serve as a protective and invisible shield around her body. She also has had experience with the X-Men, as she elected not to accept an offer to attend Charles Xavier’s elite school.
Directed by Josh Boone (The Fault in Our Stars), the film aims to capture an aura of horror, infusing it with a thriller feel. Thanks to the success of Logan and Deadpool, it seems like Fox feels much more confident in creating genre-bending and unexpected films. Fans are hoping that this will pay off yet again, resulting in another great film in the X-Men franchise (it’s okay if we forget about X-Men: The Last Stand, right?).
Other actors in the film include returning cast member James McAvoy as Professor X, as well as new characters played by Blu Hunt, Charlie Heaton, Maisie Williams, Henry Zaga, and Anya Taylor-Joy.
For those looking forward to more mutant-related content, a Dark Phoenix film is also in development. McAvoy will also return to this film, making Professor X quite involved in the upcoming lineup!
New Mutants will enter theaters on April 13, 2018.
