After winning big at Cannes, it is no surprise that Alfonso Cuaron’s Roma is Mexico’s official selection for the Foreign Language Oscar race. The announcement comes via the film’s distributor, Netflix.
Roma is the highly anticipated follow-up to Cuaron’s Oscar-winning 2013 film Gravity. The film is a passion project of sorts for Cuaron as it takes place in Mexico City during the 1970s, is shot totally in black and white, and captures the intimate year-in-the-life of a middle class family living in this personal setting.
This is somewhat of an early submission for the Foreign Language race, but, with such a hot buzz film on their hands, it is no surprise that Mexico has made the decision so quickly. Over the next few months, more submissions will pour in and be narrowed down to a 9-film shortlist by the Academy before the final 5 are chosen for the Oscars ceremony.
Mexico has yet to ever win a Best Foreign Language Academy Award, but has been nominated on 8 occasions. With such incredible buzz already surrounding the film, though, this could finally be their year.
