Alfonso Cuarón appears ready to get behind the camera. Word of his next project is starting to make the rounds and while specifics are being kept to minimum as of now, it looks like his latest movie will be a sharp contrast to his last film – the grandly scaled epic Gravity (2012).
Gravity was a massive blockbuster and the winner of seven Academy Awards – including two for Cuarón himself – so no matter what, that film would mark a hard act to follow. The Mexican-born filmmaker is instead going back home for an intimate new feature set to revolve around the year-in-the-life of a middle class family in 1970s Mexico City. Echoes of Cuarón’s critically beloved Y Tu Mamá También (which earned Cuarón his first Oscar nomination for co-writing the original screenplay) appear already in store.
The film doesn’t currently have a title. Cuarón will not just direct the upcoming drama but pen the screenplay as well. Participant Media is producing the film and production is slated to start later this fall in Mexico. “This film is close to my heart and my first in Mexico since Y Tu Mamá También. I am thrilled to be making it with the Participant team,” Cuaron stated.
Cuarón has previously directed Children of Men, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban and A Little Princess. Stay tuned.
