Alchemy has acquired the U.S. distribution rights to the futuristic love story The Lobster, according to Variety. The deal came together after the movie premiered at the 2015 Cannes Film Festival. The film takes place in dystopian future where single people are arrested and forced to find a mate within 45 days. If they fail to do so, they are transformed into an animal and released into the wild. The movie focuses on David’s (Colin Farrell) quest to find his soulmate.
The movie sports an impressive cast of women that includes Rachel Weisz (Oz: The Great and Powerful), Lea Seydoux (Blue is the Warmest Color), and Ashley Jensen (How to Train Your Dragon). John C. Reilly (Guardians of the Galaxy) also stars in the movie.
Yorgos Lanthimos (Dogtooth) directed the film, and this looks like it will follow the tone of his past work. Most recently he made Alps, which told the story of a business where they impersonate the recently deceased to help their clients through the grieving process.
No release date has been set for The Lobster, but the film is currently set to hit theaters in the UK and Ireland October 16. Given the cast and the success of Dogtooth – which was nominated for the Best Foreign Language Film Oscar – it wouldn’t be surprising if the movie was released in the fall stateside as well.
