According to The Guardian, the producer of Alan Partridge: Alpha Papa (released in the U.S. as Alan Partridge), Henry Normal, has confirmed that a sequel to this 2013 film is in the early stages of development. Said 2013 film is Declan Lowney’s action comedy film that opened at number one in the British box office. The film starred Steve Coogan as an early morning DJ.
In addition to Alan Partridge, Coogan is also known for his recent roles as Martin Sixsmith in Stephen Frear’s four-time Oscar nominated, Philomena (2013) and the voice of Silas in Pierre Coffin and Chris Renaud’s two-time Oscar nominated, Despicable Me 2 (2013). Up next for Coogan (in the more foreseeable future) is Elaine Constantine’s drama- musical, Northern Soul (2014), a film about two friends reawakening their identity through American soul music.
Coogan and Normal are both co-founders of Baby Cow, the production company behind the sequel to Alan Partridge.
Coogan’s portrayal of a politically and socially uncouth radio personality was successfully transitioned from television to film. In 2002, the second series of I’m Alan Partridge aired on BBC2. Coogan returned to this role eight years later, with an online series, Alan Partridge’s Mid Morning Matters (funded by Fosters).
This series later became Sky Atlantic, which is currently in the process of creating new episodes. The character of Alan Partridge was cherished by UK audiences, proven by it’s reincorporation into a pair of specials, Alan Partridge: Welcome to the Places of My Life, and a TV Movie, Alan Partridge on Open Books with Martin Bryce.
The first film rendition of Alan Partridge’s renowned character recently opened in the U.S. We look forward to seeing how the sequel to Alan Partridge translates across the Atlantic.
