Aftermath is one of many recent and upcoming films to utilize the ever popular post-apocalyptic setting. That’s not to say they’re all carbon copies and you only need to see one to see them all. Quite the contrary. David Michod’s The Rover looks to be a harrowing drama that studies the nature of man and his propensity for violence and mercy; Vic Armstrong’s Left Behind (based on a novel series of the same name) will be a Christian morality tale; George Miller’s Mad Max: Fury Road (if it stays true to the rest of the Mad Max series) will be a rough and rugged action flick.
Aftermath – directed by Peter Engert and written by Christian McDonald – looks like an old fashioned horror flick (one of the most logical ways to handle the after-the-end-of-the-world setting). In fact plot is easily comparable to one horror classic: George A. Romero’s Night of the Living Dead – arguably a post-apocalyptic film itself.
The devastating horror of a nuclear apocalypse is now reality and nine desperate strangers find themselves clinging to life in a farmhouse cellar, while radioactive fallout descends on the darkened world above. These would-be survivors face the nightmare of dwindling supplies, poisonous air and the greatest threat of all — the hordes of zombie-like refugees who want in. With each dying day, their choice becomes clearer — stay and let the makeshift shelter become their tomb or face the unknown terrors of the world outside.
The film stars Edward Furlong, Monica Keena, Andre Royo, and Jessie Rusu. It’s set for a June, 18 2014 release in theaters and on VOD.
