Every year, the American Film Institute (AFI) releases a ranking of the top ten films of the year. And on Thursday, the AFI announced its Top Ten Films of 2025. In alphabetical order, here are the films:

  • Avatar: Fire and Ash
  • Bugonia
  • Frankenstein
  • Hamnet
  • Jay Kelly
  • Marty Supreme
  • One Battle After Another
  • Sinners
  • Train Dreams
  • Wicked: For Good

In addition to these honorees, the AFI announced that it will also be honoring Jafar Panahi’s Palme d’Or-winning It Was Just an Accident with a special award. Alongside this announcement, AFI president and CEO Bob Gazzale provided a statement that reads as follows:

“For more than a quarter of a century, AFI Awards has held the flag high for the community without competition. It is AFI’s honor to celebrate these creative ensembles as one, as together they have proved the power of art in challenging times.”

It’s no surprise to see many of these films in AFI’s list. The list includes some of the most critically acclaimed films of the year, such as One Battle After Another, which received almost universal praise upon its release at the end of September, and Sinners, one of the highest-rated films released early in the year. Other standout films on the list include Hamnet, which won the Audience Award at this year’s Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF), and Marty Supreme, which received a huge standing ovation when it had its surprise premiere at the New York Film Festival (NYFF).

All these films, along with the filmmakers involved in making them, will be honored and celebrated at a luncheon held in Los Angeles on January 9, 2026.
