After a noticeable lack of female nominations at the 2018 Golden Globes, in which absolutely no women directors were nominated, a move that has left many fans and, apparently, celebrities, perplexed and angry, Us has reported “at least 30 actresses have said they plan to participate” in a protest at the 2018 Golden Globes by wearing black to the awards ceremony. Along with gender inequality, the protest extends to sexual harassment, as well.
The flood of allegations that have washed through Hollywood since Harvey Weinstein’s accusers have come forward sparked a #MeToo movement and more women have bravely chosen to speak up. The environment has been ripe for a progressive discussion about just how prevalent sexual harassment is, not only in Hollywood, but throughout the world. The Women’s March in January 2017, extended across the world and January 2018 promises to be no different during the awards season.
The protest might extend beyond the Golden Globes to include all awards ceremonies throughout the beginning of the year. Some of the nominees mentioned in the protest are Jessica Chastain, Mary J. Blige, Meryl Streep and Emma Stone. According to Us magazine, the protest started with just a few but seemed to grow organically, much like the Women’s March just one year ago.
