Known for playing character Jonathan Byers in the acclaimed Netflix series Stranger Things, Charlie Heaton is also in talks to become part of the Marvel universe in the upcoming New Mutants film as the character Sam Guthrie, also known as Cannonball.  Cannonball has the ability to generate energy and use it to blast targets and defend himself. This power also allows him to travel across the air. While Heaton is no “stranger” to acting with a super-powered co-star, this role will allow him the chance to explore a more uniquely powered character.

Maisie Williams has also signed onto the film as Rahne Sinclair (Wolfsbane). She joins her onscreen Game of Thrones sister, Sophie Turner (who plays Jean Grey in X-Men: Apocalypse) as a member of the Marvel universe. Both actresses play sisters in the Stark family, who are represented by an emblem with a direwolf upon. Topically, Wolfsbane has the ability to change from a person into a wolf, which allows her greater physical strength and speed.

Actress Rosario Dawson is currently rumored to become potential cast member. While she also plays nurse Claire Temple, a staple of the Marvel Netflix television shows, there will not be any continuity errors springing from multiple Marvel roles. Notably, the X-Men films are produced by Twentieth Century Fox and exist in a separate world from the Netflix television shows, which are a part of the Marvel cinematic universe (also shortened into the MCU).

The film is based off of a series of comics known by the same name. Scheduled to hit theaters in April of 2018, it will be directed by Josh Boone.
