ACE Eddie Award Nominations

The nominations have arrived for the ACE Eddie Awards. Handed out by the American Cinema Editors (ACE) guild- founded in 1950- and honoring the finest achievements of film editing. The invisible touch behind the scenes that shapes, crafts and sculpts what ends up on movie screens, it’s perhaps the toughest and most subjective of all the technical cinematic fields. Several of the big Oscar favorites- The RevenantThe Martian and Mad Max: Fury Road– were singled out with nominations, as was Star Wars: The Force Awakens, perhaps notable bellwether for how the season may turn. However, a handful of awards favorites including big gun Spotlight and critics favorite Carol were noticeably absent from the line-up.

One of the old Oscar rules of thumb used to be that in order to be a Best Picture contender, a film must have a coinciding Best Film Editing nomination. Many pundits saw the defeat of Brokeback Mountain to Crash back in 2005 due to its lack of a Best Film Editing Oscar nod. This rule played out for every Best Picture from 1981-2014. Birdman shattered the rule last year when it failed to receive a mention for editing yet still took home the big prize, the first film to do so since Robert Redford’s Ordinary People. With that stat (now a bit diminished, but nonetheless powerful), the ACE Eddie mentions are worth a gaze. The ACE Eddie separate between dramas and comedies and also include categories for animated films and documentaries.
