So, the Russo Brothers (Anthony and Joe) are making this little comic book flick called Avengers: Infinity War. They have, let’s say, 80-odd heroes all vying for screen time, but what the hell, let’s introduce Captain Marvel as well. Because the Russos are nothing if not ambitious.
Well, it turns out that the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s most powerful hero will not be introduced in Avengers: Infinity War. It has long been suspected that Carol Danvers (to be played by Brie Larson) wouldn’t be in the film, but rumors persisted that, since Larson had been on set, she would make her debut in Infinity War. Those rumors can now be put to bed, thanks to Screen Rant and CBR.com.
Yes, her scenes were filmed, but they didn’t make the final cut. Last summer, Joe Russo spilled the beans on Captain Marvel’s involvement when asked about his favorite costume on set. “Is it …? Where’s [publicist John Pisani]? I can’t remember if we — Captain Marvel on set, is that official? If it’s not, it’s official now. I think Captain Marvel had a great outfit.”
Perhaps introducing a character of Captain Marvel’s caliber would have distracted from the already massive scope of the Infinity War conflict. Also, it likely would have extended the runtime of the movie, meaning less movie showings per day, and less money for Marvel executives to swim in, Scrooge McDuck-style, in their lavish bank vault.
Avengers: Infinity War hits theaters on April 27, while Captain Marvel makes her MCU debut on March 8th, 2019.
