The movie Green Book has been scoring big at film award shows this year. This trend continued this week at the AARP’s 18th Annual Movies for Grownups Awards, where Green Book won the award for best movie over A Star Is Born, BlacKkKlansman, Can You Ever Forgive Me? and, Roma. That night Viggo Mortensen also won best actor for his performance in Green Book. Best actress was awarded to Glen Close for her role in The Wife.
Another big winner that night was the film Can You Ever Forgive Me? starring Melissa McCarthy. The film earned the award for best screenplay, and Richard E. Grant earned the award for best supporting actor for his role in the film. The best supporting actress award went to Judi Dench for her role in All is True. The success of Green Book at award shows has been controversial. Even the family of the people who the film’s characters are based on have been critical of it. Some argue that the film perpetuates the white savior narrative and plays it safe with how it discusses racism. Then there are critics who claim that Green Book draws attention away from other 2018 movies like Sorry to Bother You, Blindspotting, The Hate U Give, BlacKkKlansman, and even Black Panther that not only address racism better than Green Book, but tackle subjects that are much more relevant to modern society.
