Fresh off its Oscar success with nominations for Lenny Abrahamson’s Room and Asif Kapadia’s Amy Winehouse documentary Amy, A24 has acquired the U.S. rights to Morris From America, according to Deadline.
The film premiered Friday in the U.S. Dramatic Competition at the Sundance Film Festival. Written and directed by Chad Hartigan (This is Martin Bonner), the feature is a coming-of-age story about a rap-loving 13 year old African-American boy who moves to Germany with his father. The film captures his adventures and misadventures, romances and friendships, as he adapts to his new environment. Markees Christmas in his feature film debut stars as Morris, with Craig Robinson (Hot Tub Time Machine 2) playing his father. Carla Juri, Lina Keller, Jakub Gierszal, Levin Henning, Patrick Güldenberg, and Eva Löbau round out the cast.
Morris from America is produced by Martin Heisler, Sara Murphy, Adele Romanski and Gabriele Simon. Michael B. Clark and Alex Turtletaub of Beachside are executive producers.
