With A24’s highly anticipated The Backrooms releasing this Friday, Collider has released an exclusive image of YouTuber Kane Parsons’ directorial debut. Along with the exclusive image, Collider has also revealed the opening sequence for the web series-turned-feature, so click off now to avoid spoilers.
As per Collider, the first scene of the film is described as,
A mysterious doorway opens in the basement of a furniture showroom, leading directly into the seemingly endless maze of yellow-tinged walls and buzzing fluorescent lights.
We soon learn that the main character, Clark (Chiwetel Ejiofor), is the owner of this showroom and decides to go into the mysterious realm for “research”. Clark soon learns that these “misremembered” rooms don’t just have furniture in them, leaving the chance that something could follow him out. Collider’s exclusive shows a confused Clark as he overlooks the Backrooms in terrified awe.
Academy Award nominee Renate Reinsve joins Ejiofer. She plays Clark’s therapist, to whom he tells about the Backrooms, and from some footage in the trailers, she will be venturing into the misremembering realm as well. Parsons directed the feature, making him the youngest director in A24’s history, from a script by Will Soodik. The feature is based on the web series that Parsons created in 2022.
