The other day saw the release of the first trailer for the upcoming horror film from independent entertainment company A24, Midsommar. It is written and directed by the mind behind last year’s Hereditary, American filmmaker Ari Aster. This will be Aster’s second feature film, following the critical and commercial success that the Toni Collette-led horror debut had.
The official synopsis for the film from studio A24 states: “The summer film centers around a vacationing couple in a small Swedish village. The trip starts out slightly idyllic as main character Dani (Florence Pugh) and her husband Christian (Jack Reynor) becomes acquainted with the town. But as her time lingers she becomes increasingly more suspicious of their neighbors as its cult-like tendencies become apparent.”
In the trailer for Midsommar, a lot of the odd and discomforting imagery Aster employed in Hereditary can be seen along with continued emphasis on cults and gatherings. Florence Pugh, Jack Reynor, William Jackson Harper, and Will Poulter are starring in the flick. Aster will also be reuniting with the cinematographer, Pawel Pogorzelski, who worked on the dark and cold tone of the director’s previous film, this time to bring a colorful and warm summer charm to a Swedish vacation.
Midsommar is set to release in theaters on August 9th of this year and the trailer can be checked out below.
