A New Look At Guillermo Del Toro’s ‘Frankenstein’

Guillermo del Toro’s long-awaited adaptation of Mary Shelley’s novel Frankenstein is finally taking shape, offering a glimpse into what could be a defining moment in modern Gothic cinema. With first-look photos recently released, audiences have been treated to the grandiose and haunting sets that promise to immerse viewers in the dark, intricate world of Shelley’s iconic work of gothic science fiction. The film, which wrapped production in September 2024, is scheduled to debut on Netflix in 2025.

The star-studded cast includes Star Wars star Oscar Isaac as Victor Frankenstein, Jacob Elordi (Saltburn) as the monstrous creation, and Pearl franchise star Mia Goth in an undisclosed role. Rounding out the ensemble are legendary Austrian-German actor Christoph Waltz, Rumours (2024) co-star Charles Dance, All Quiet on the Western Front (2022) star Felix Kammerer, and the voice actor of Geppetto in Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio (2022), David Bradley. Del Toro, known for his visually arresting works like The Shape of Water (2017) and Pan’s Labyrinth (2006), has long dreamed of bringing Frankenstein to life. This project fulfills a vision he’s nurtured for over a decade, blending Gothic aesthetics with an exploration of creation and destruction.

Set in the remnants of decayed architectural grandeur, the Gothic ruins featured in the film serve as both a backdrop and a character, emphasizing the thematic interplay between beauty and decay.

As the Gothic genre experiences a resurgence with films like Robert Eggers’ Nosferatu (2024), del Toro’s Frankenstein is poised to stand as a cornerstone of this revitalization. With its powerhouse cast, stunning visuals, and the visionary touch of one of cinema’s most imaginative directors, Frankenstein promises to be a profound and haunting reimagining of the classic tale, resonating with both fans of the genre and newcomers alike.
