A Minecraft Movie has recently surpassed A Super Mario Bros. Movie box office grossing for opening weekend. While only being released in theaters for four days, A Minecraft Movie became amongst the top ten video game movies of all time!
A Minecraft Movie was directed by John Hess and had a budget of $150 million. The film has two leading star-studded actors, Jack Black and Jason Momoa, while Black plays the iconic Steve from the original Minecraft video game. Even though there currently have been mixed reviews from critics for A Minecraft Movie, with a 48% critical reception on Rotten Tomatoes, the movie has become a major blockbuster earning over $330 million in total gross, defying critical expectations, as well as reigniting the theatrical box office market.
As mentioned, A Minecraft Movie holds a 48% critical score on Rotten Tomatoes but its audience score remains higher at 88%. Due to this high audience reception, Warner Bros. pictures has resurfaced itself following some underwhelming box office busts over the last several months. In addition to beating A Super Mario Bros. Movie opening weekend, A Minecraft Movie also beat Barbie’s opening weekend last week. A Minecraft Movie is also set to surpass Barbie’s total gross of over $1 billion.
A Minecraft Movie was recently released theatrically on April 4th, 2025, and is still available to catch at the theaters this spring.
