‘A Minecraft Movie’ Debuts With Middling Critical Reception

The highly anticipated video game adaptation A Minecraft Movie debuts this weekend, and the critical response has been middling at best so far. The film currently sits at a 53% on Rotten Tomatoes, with the audience side yet to be revealed.

The film is an adaptation of the highest selling video game of all time, so it is bound to be popular regardless of quality. The live-action film stars Jack Black, Jason Momoa, Danielle Brooks, Jennifer Coolidge, Emma Myers, and Sebastian Hansen. The film follows a group of misfits who find themselves transported into the world of Minecraft. The group follows Steve (Jack Black) as they learn about the wacky rules of this strange world.

Video game adaptations seem to have become more popular as of late, and with successes such as The Super Mario Bros. Movie and the Sonic the Hedgehog trilogy, it is easy to see why. Aside from A Minecraft Movie, there are several other adaptations set to release this year. The HBO series The Last of Us is receiving a second season this month, based on the Naughty Dog survival games. Additionally, a movie based on Until Dawn releases later this month. Later this year, sequels to both Mortal Kombat and Five Nights at Freddy’s are slated to release

It will be interesting to see where audiences and the remaining critics fall on A Minecraft Movie and if the poor reception will affect its box office prospects. Regardless, get ready for many more video game adaptations.
