91 Original Songs Up for Oscar Consideration

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced yesterday that 91 original songs are contending for Best Original Song nominations for the 89th Academy Awards. The songs are from eligible feature-length movies released in 2016.

A maximum of two songs may be nominated from any one film. To be eligible, the song must be original and written specifically for the film, and must consist of words and music. A clearly audible, intelligible, substantive rendition of both lyric and melody must be used in the body of the film or as the first music cue in the end credits.

All voting members will be asked to watch a compilation of the song clips and then vote for their top 5 in order of preference. The 5 original songs receiving the highest number of votes will make the Oscar-nominated list. The nominations will be announced on January 24, 2017.
