The upcoming comedy Animal Friends is facing yet another change to its release date. The most recent move puts the film debuting nearly half a year later, on January 22nd of 2027. Described as being a mix of animated and live action footage, Animal Friends follows two animals on a cross-country trek to return to where they grew up, evading wildlife agents and hitting unexpected run-ins with the DEA along the way.
Led by Jason Momoa and Ryan Reynolds, Animal Friends’ all-star supporting cast is rounded out by Aubrey Plaza, Dan Levy, Addison Rae, Vince Vaughn, and Eric André. Deadline notes that Animal Friends has not only bounced around release dates but has also been handed around by several distributors. The film was originally set to be put out via Sony around a year ago, until it faced a multitude of setbacks and release delays, landing in the lap of Legendary Pictures.
The new release date of January 22nd, as Deadline also reported, is a much sparser one in terms of counterprogramming. The only other titles set for that date next year are The Third Parent and Air Bud Returns. Ironically, both Air Bud and Animal Friends feature animal protagonists, but Air Bud sticks much closer to the realm of family-friendly, as opposed to Animal Friends’ R-rated comedy billing.
