The 28th annual Screen Actors Guild Awards took place Sunday night surrounding 15 categories within film and television. CODA made history last night for being the first film with a predominantly deaf cast to take home the award for best film ensemble. The cast, including Marlee Matlin, expressed pure shock and joy at the win. While accepting the award and ending her speech, she was interpreted by a sign-language interpreter by using the sign for “I love you” to the audience.
Earlier in the night CODA also scored another historic win after Troy Koster became the first deaf actor to win a SAG Award for best-supporting actor in the first award of the night. Using a sign-language interpreter, he expressed his love to his wife and joked that his daughter can use the statuette to hold his jewelry.
Will Smith took home the best actor award for a leading role in King Richard. Venus Williams was sitting next to him in the audience, stating that winning the award may have been “the greatest moments of my career just now, because my name was called for King Richard while sitting next to Venus Williams.” Smith portrayed William’s father in the film. Jessica Chastain won best actress for her role in The Eyes of Tammy Faye calling Tammy Faye Bakker whom she portrayed, a trailblazer. Ariana DeBose won the award for best-supporting actress in West Side Story, thanking Steven Speilberg in her speech.
