Dune took home the most wins last night at the 2022 BAFTA Awards, but it was Jane Campion’s Power of the Dog that took home the coveted best film and director awards. The BAFTA Awards are the most celebrated event in the British film industry and served its first calendar return since before the Covid-19 pandemic began. The event brought new energy to its past, with its first live edition. 

The ceremony was held at London’s Royal Albert Hall and had a number of no-shows from nominees, likely due to the awards season that held the Critics Choice Awards on the same day. Co-stars stepped up to accept awards on winners’ behalf, Campion, had her Best Director award picked up by Power of the Dog star Benedict Cumberbatch. Cumberbatch lost best actor to King Richard lead Will Smith, saying at the podium, “You don’t lose to Will Smith, you win to be in his company.” 

After the pandemic overhauled the industry, the event has not been held in person since 2020. This year, there was a packed, unmasked audience, very reminiscent of ‘before’ times. Throughout the night, Dune took home five awards, the most of the evening- including Cinematography, Production Design, Sound, Special Visual Effects, and Original Score. CODA took home two awards for Adapted Screenplay and Supporting Actor from Troy Kotsur.
