2015 Venice Film Festival Line-Up Announced

On the heels of the announcement Tuesday of many of the films set to play the 2015 Toronto Film Festival, comes today’s unveiling the 2015 Venice Film Festival slate. With, broader picture has been laid out of what the fall festival season is going to look like and how the 2015 awards season may form. Venice, celebrating its 72nd year, is one of the most prestigious of the international film festivals. It’s already been announced that Everest, the survival film starring Jake Gyllenhaal and slew of others will open and that Scott Cooper’s Black Mass (starring Johnny Depp in a return to dramatic work) will make its world premiere.

Among that notable titles playing in competition at Venice include Tom Hooper’s The Danish Girl, period film starring Oscar winner Eddie Redmayne (The Theory of Everything) as transgender pioneer/artist Lili Elbe. That film, coming to theaters on November 27th, will make its world premiere at Venice (and also play Toronto) as it jockeys for awards play later in the year. Also notable, another Toronto player Beasts of No Nation, will make its world premiere in competition at Venice- the film directed by Cary Fukunaga (Jane Eyre) marks big theatrical play for Netflix. Other notable films include A Bigger Splash, Luca Guadagnino’s follow-up to his acclaimed 2010 melodrama I Am Love starring Tilda Swinton (Trainwreck), Ralph Fiennes (The Grand Budapest Hotel), Matthias Schoenaerts (who also co-stars in The Danish Girl) and Dakota Johnson (Fifty Shades of Grey).

Also notable, Martin Scorsese will unveil his 16-minute short film called The Audition. The film promotes the opening of Melco-Crown’s movie-themed resort and casino in Macau and features Leonardo DiCaprio, Robert De Niro and Brad Pitt. Check out the Venice Film Festival line-up below:
