‘1917’ Dethrones ‘Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker’ For Top Box Office Spot

Ever since its big wins at the 2020 Golden Globes, Universal and DreamWorks‘ World War I drama film 1917 has taken over the current cinematic scene. According to The Hollywood Reporter, 1917 dominated the Friday box office with $14 million.

Victory, however, is not over for the epic war film. Initially projecting for $20-25 million for this weekend, 1917 is on its way to earn a total of $37 million in the domestic box office. 1917 ultimately dethrones The Rise of Skywalkerwhich had reigned the box office since its release on December 20, 2019 and will be No. 2 on the charts as it enters its fourth weekend with the expectation of $15 million to $16 million.

1917 has garnered such success that it has become one of the most talked-about movies of January so far. Because of its prestigious Golden Globe wins for Best Director (Sam Mendes) and Best Picture-Drama, it is not too far-fetched to say that 1917  has a very high chance of receiving a nomination for the 92nd Academy Awards, which are expected to be revealed soon on Monday, January 13.

1917 takes place during World War I and sees two British soldiers tasked with a seemingly impossible mission of crossing into enemy territory to deliver a crucial message that could potentially save lives. The film has received positive reviews for its powerful musical score, striking realism, and unique cinematography – the entire film appears as one continuous take, which is a bold, artistic feat. Those who have already watched 1917 would not be surprised to see this epic war film reigning the charts.
