Regina King kicks off her directorial debut with this historical fiction film based on an actual meeting between Muhammad Ali after his fight with Sonny Liston, singer Sammy Cooke, legendary running-back Jim Brown, and Malcolm X. These four giants discuss their lives, the times the live in and the contributions each wants to make to Black America.

This is an incredible movie that you would not want to miss.

 

2. Sound of Metal

Riz Ahmed plays Punk-metal drummer Ruben who is suddenly confronted with hearing loss.  He must come to terms with losing his hearing, joining the deaf community, and realizing there may be more to life than the sound of his drumming. To complicate matters, he is also a heroin addict.

The movie is nominated for several Oscars, including Best Picture and Best Actor. It wins the awards for Best Sound and Film Editing. Watch how the tantalizing sound performance immerses you into Ruben’s story.

 

3. Aliens

Awkwafina stars in this sad but moving film about saying goodbye to her grandmother. The Mandarin translation for The Farewell means “Don’t Tell Her.” Billi Wang (Awkwafina) has an extremely close bond with her grandmother Nai, who has terminal lung cancer but does not know it. Wang is supposed to say goodbye, without telling her grandmother about the cancer. It is a moving cultural narrative about life and family.

 

5. Knives Out

Writer and Director Rian Johnson (Looper, Brick, and The Last Jedi) takes the old-fashioned murder mystery story and an outstanding ensemble to solve the murder of a famous crime novelist played by Christopher Plummer.

The investigation is led brilliantly by Daniel Craig as a Southern detective and leads through battles over loyalty, inheritance, and family fueds.
