With the season of scares in full swing, I think it’s best to ask the news team what their favorite halloween/scary movies are. So I asked them and this is what they had to say. Please enjoy.
Tyler Justin Pruyn — Two of my favorite Halloween films are Scream and Cabin in the Woods. The two films do a great job of making fun of horror movies, while actually being scary. I feel like horror and comedy go particularly well together. Both genres build tension and then have an impactful release. The slasher genre feels overplayed, but these films really bring the scares and the laughs.
Joseph Stanger — Evil Dead 2 and The Lighthouse
Arden Terry — Cube and Get Out
Ryan Pineda — Evil Dead 2. Without a doubt a staple in Horror films perfect for the Halloween season. Evil Dead 2 works so well as a follow up to a really revolutionary and great horror film with the first Evil Dead, the second film tops everything the first film did by a long shot. It has so much energy and personality as it combines heavy atmosphere, over the top gore and creativity with its effects and characters into one fun and frightful horror comedy that has a little bit of everything. No other word can describe this movie except groovy.
The Lighthouse. It has only been about a year since this movie has been released and it already has become an instant classic. It’s mostly due to the fact this film takes a very classic approach with its look with a black and white aesthetic with even a 1.19:1 aspect ratio to give the film a look in the vein of 1930s-40s horror. However the modern twist is that it goes a lot deeper into themes or isolation and really entrances you with its surreal and disturbing visuals, with so many mesmerizing shots. The film elevated by two excellent performances from both Robert Pattinson and Willem Dafoe who should have gotten at least a nomination for this role. Regardless, it is a film that stands as one of the most unique and possibly even the best horror film from this past decade.
Gabriel Guirola — It has to be “Get Out” for me!
Cassandra Alese — I don’t like Halloween or watch scary movies but these are the movies I watched that I liked Hocus Pocus and Nightmare Before Christmas.
