Deadline has recently revealed that through AFM that Tye Sheridan, Tom Hardy, Stephan James, Bill Skarsgård, Pete Davidson, Ashton Sanders, Martin Sensmeier, Moises Arias, and Angus Cloud assemble the ensemble for the war film The Things They Carried. On top of all that young intriguing talent, the casting search is not yet over.
The film is based on the novel of short stories, written by Tim O’Brien, about an army platoon on the ground during the Vietnam war. Each story focuses on a different aspect of being a part of the military. Simply alone many of these stories could make their own movie entirely.
Helming the film is director Rupert Sanders of the Scarlett Johansson led Ghost in the Shell and Kristen Stewart led Snow White and The Huntsman. The 49-year old english director has received decent reviews with some backlash in these adaptations, but has never worked with an ensemble this big. Though, the script writers are truly intriguing.
Penning the adaptation is novelist turned screenwriter Scott B. Smith. He recently wrote The Burnt Orange Heresy and is set to write and be executive producer for the Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy Amazon series The Peripheral. Aside from his ties with the Westworld show runners, a novelist writing an adaptation for another novel is quite interesting and either way will provide a new perspective to the source material.
Tom Hardy and Tye Sheridan are likely to lead this piece, and both are coming off of big-budget outings. Hardy is by far the most established cast member and has been in everything from Awards-darling The Revenant to indie films like Locke to CGI-fests like Venom. Tye Sheridan has recently been led in huge blockbusters Ready Player One and Scott Summers in the last batch of Fox X-Men movies.
Stephan James is a young actor with an impressive resume already as he’s played historical icons Jesse Owens and John Lewis and he’s only 26. Angus Cloud is also young, but has the least built resume of the group. Though, he is still in the massively popular Euphoria.
Among the other actors, former Disney star Moises Arias and current SNL cast member Pete Davidson recently appeared together in The King of Staten Island. Ashton Sanders is famous for his portrayal of Chiron in Moonlight, which is an incredibly riveting and subtle performance. Martin Sensmeier has been in demand appearing in Westworld, the Magnificent Seven, and Wind River.
Overall, based on the cast as of now it is clear that this ensemble is filled with young talent that has been in demand for the last five years in the industry. This picture is coming together well and with the source material, it will be incredible to see how this film shapes out.
There is no scheduled production date.
