The Walt Disney Studios is developing a live-action film for Disney+ called Greek Freak inspired by the true-life story of NBA star Giannis Antetokounmpo and his family. Akin Omotoso is set to direct the biopic.
Giannis Antetokounmpo is one of NBA’s biggest stars, he just won his second MVP in a row, and his brother Kostas just won an NBA championship with the Los Angeles Lakers. The extraordinary true story follows the Antetokounmpo family, who, through faith, determination, and their unbreakable bond, would unite to lift themselves out of a life of poverty as undocumented immigrants living in Greece.
Arash Amel will write the script with Bernie Goldmann producing. Giannis Antetokounmpo is an executive producer as well for his biopic. Omotoso is a talented South African-based director who had a feature film Vaya at the Toronto International Film Festival for its World Premiere and was picked up by Netflix.
Disney has done well for itself, making great inspirational sports movies like Miracle starring Kurt Russell about an incredible true story of the 1980 U.S. Men’s Hockey team who defeated the Russian team to win the gold medal. Remember the Titans starring Denzel Washington about an inspirational story of two football coaches who overcome their differences and turns a group of hostile young men into champions.
The biopic will begin filming in 2021 in Antetokounmpo’s native Greece and other U.S. locations.
