Its no time like to the present to plan for the future and to the future we go! It is official, Disney is now developing a live-action Space Mountain movie, and just six weeks prior, Disney announced that they were working on a new Haunted Mansion live-action movie. Disney has been working on expanding its universe of films by adding more theme park ride based movies. Space Mountain is just the latest live-action to be made under Disney.
Space Mountain is an indoor rollercoaster set in outer space. It was first unveiled at Florida’s Walt Disney World Resort in 1975 and has had great success ever since. The studio has got Joby Harold, worked on King Arthur: Legend of the Sword and Zack Snyder’s upcoming film Army of the Dead, will produce and write the script for live-action with his spouse Tory Tunnell and their Safehouse Pictures banner. Dan Lin and Jonathan Eirich are also producing the film through their Rideback banner.
The Jungle Cruise ride was made in 1955, making it the oldest theme park ride made into a live-action movie and is due on July 30, 2021, starring Dwayne Johnson and Emily Blunt. Disney had outstanding success from its Pirates of the Caribbean ride that opened in 1967 at Disneyland and came on the big screen in 2003, starring Johnny Depp as Captain Jack Sparrow. All five films generated $1.5 billion domestically and about $3 billion internationally. A female-oriented Pirates of the Caribbean is in the works with Margot Robbie in the lead role.
The Space Mountain ride at Disneyland still has a crazy long line after all these years later, so maybe there will be a great success with the live-action? Fingers crossed!
