According to Deadline, Academy Award winner Chris Cooper (Live by Night) is the latest to join Sony’s adaptation of the classic novel by Louise May Alcott, Little Women. At the helm is Greta Gerwig, who gained much buzz this past awards season for writing and directing Lady Bird, which garnered her Oscar nominations as director and screenwriter. Gerwig is also adapting the screenplay for Little Women.
Little Women follows the lives of the four March sisters: Meg (Emma Watson), Jo (thrice-Oscar nominated Saoirse Ronan, including for her starring role last year in Gerwig’s Lady Bird), Beth (Eliza Scanlen), and Amy (Florence Pugh). Multiple Oscar winner Meryl Streep plays Aunt March. Also in the A-list cast are Oscar nominated actor Timothée Chalamet (Call Me By Your Name), twice-Oscar nominated actress Laura Dern (Star Wars: The Last Jedi), and Bob Odenkirk (Better Call Saul). Cooper’s role has not yet been announced.
Cooper is currently filming Sony’s untitled Mr. Rogers/Tom Hanks project which stars Hanks as Fred Rogers. Cooper is also set to star in Sylvia Caminer’s drama Chickadee, about an immigrant Italian girl who takes her abusive stepfather to court.
Amy Pascal, Denise Di Novi, and Robin Swicord are producing. Andrea Giannetti will oversee the production for Sony’s Columbia Pictures.
Little Women is scheduled to bow in theaters on Christmas Day next year.
