The highly anticipated Black Panther that had fans craving his own movie since the debut in Captain America: Civil War is kicking butt at the box office as it has officially topped records not only for the weekend but also for the Marvel Universe.
The film starring Chadwick Boseman and Michael B. Jordan is not your traditional superhero movie, as it takes takes place in the fictional highly affluent and technically advanced city of Wakanda in Africa. It’s a battle of rightful kings and heirs, as the former King of Wakanda (Forest Whitaker) passes on, leaving the claim to the throne in his son’s hands, only to discover an outside uprising that challenges the city and new king.
The film finished the 4- day weekend with $242 million, the highest President’s Day weekend total to date; but the momentum hasn’t stopped yet as it continues to break records daily with an impressive $21 million on Tuesday alone, according to Variety. That is the highest total for the Marvel Universe and 7th biggest Tuesday total of all time.
So far according to Fandango, Black Panther is the fifth highest grossing film with a strong $263 million thus far, and is quickly climbing to surpass other top grossing films including Star Wars: The Force Awakens with $325.4 million and has already well passed the North American five day totals of both Star Wars: The Last Jedi by $1.3 million as well as Jurassic World by $4.6 million.
The film is well on its way to breaking even more records, especially if all the fans decrying they’ll see it again and again make good on their promise.
