The day has arrived! In the past couple of months, we’ve heard from the critics, the guilds, the Golden Globes and had our say over the best achievements in filmmaking of 2015 but now the big guns have arrived. Early Thursday morning, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) revealed the nominations for the 88th Academy Awards. There was some surprises, some major snubs and likely more than a few controversies and think pieces already in the works- so business as usual on the Oscar front.

The morning kicked off as Oscar winning director Ang Lee (Brokeback Mountain) and Guillermo del Toro (Pan’s Labyrinth) introduced the first group of nominations, later followed by Academy president Cheryl Boone Isaacs and actor John Krasinski (13 Hours). The Revenant led the field with 12 nominations, further building momentum from the somewhat surprise Golden Globe win earlier this week. George Miller’s Mad Max: Fury Road trailed closely behind with 10 nods; both of which earned Best Picture nominations along with six other features, marking the second year in a row the Academy chose eight films in the top category.
