Cate Blanchett (Blue Jasmine) may be entering the Marvel Cinematic Universe. According to Variety, the 2-time Oscar winner is in talks for an unspecified role in Thor: Ragnarok, the third standalone Thor entry in the Marvel franchise. This would mark Blanchett’s debut in the superhero fold however the actress is no stranger to epic franchises, having portrayed the elf Galadriel in Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings and Hobbit sagas.
If talks come to fruition, Blanchett will join Chris Hemsworth (In the Heart of the Sea), Tom Hiddleston (Crimson Peak) and Mark Ruffalo (Spotlight) in the film- each of whom is returning to the franchise continuing the portray Thor, Loki and The Hulk, respectively. Thor: Ragnarok will be directed by Taika Waititi (What We Do in the Shadows) from a script by Christopher Yost (Thor: The Dark World) and Craig Kyle- Stephany Folsom recently came aboard to do a polish on the screenplay. The movie is set to open on November 3, 2017.
Blanchett is coming off a strong year- recently earning Screen Actors Guild and Golden Globe nominations for her acclaimed work in Todd Haynes’ 1950s set lesbian romance Carol. She also recently starred in James Vanderbilt’s Truth opposite screen legend Robert Redford and played the Wicked Stepmother in the live action blockbuster Cinderella earlier this year. She is slated to appear in Terrence Malick’s upcoming Knight of Cups opposite Oscar winners Christian Bale (The Big Short) and Natalie Portman.
