The ever expanding cast of Ridley Scott’s The Martian has just added three more impressive names. Headlined by Chiwetel Ejiofor (12 Years a Slave), the film has also added Sebastian Stan (Captain America: The Winter Soldier) and Mackenzie Davis (That Awkward Moment), Entertainment Weekly reports.
Although there’s no word on who the new cast-mates will be playing, production for the film will start next month, so more information should be coming in within the following months. Even before the addition of Ejiofor, Stan, and Davis, The Martian was already amassing a rather esteemed collection of talent for director Scott. Sean Bean (HBO’s Game of Thrones), Jeff Daniels (Dumb and Dumber To), Jessica Chastain (Interstellar), Kate Mara (Netflix’s House of Cards), Michael Pena (Fury), Kristen Wiig (The Skeleton Twins) and Donald Glover (TV’s Community) are already part of the large and eclectic cast.
The film stars Matt Damon (The Monuments Men) in the lead role of an astronaut marooned on a colony base on Mars who must survive long enough for NASA to assemble a rescue. Still, while many people might see a plot similar to that of Alfonso Cuarón’s Gravity, the large collection of talent indicates that this is not going to be the solitary spaceman movie that that the synopsis suggests.
While the cast list alone should be reason for excitement, audiences will remember the equally impressive talent involved in Ridley Scott’s The Counselor last year. That cast – which included Michael Fassbender (Frank), Brad Pitt (Fury), Javier Bardem (Skyfall), Penelope Cruz (Vicky Cristina Barcelona), and Cameron Diaz (Bad Teacher) – ultimately couldn’t save the film from being a critical and box office flop.
The Martian is written by Drew Goddard, known for penning the 2012 horror hit, The Cabin in the Woods. It is scheduled for a release date of November 25th, 2015. In the meantime, audiences can see Ridley Scott’s next effort Exodus: Gods & Kings on December 12th.
