In order to keep an audience on its toes, films may often shift into differing tones or even entire genres for brief periods of time. Here are four films with shifting tones and genres.
The Rivals of Amziah King (2025)
The Rivals of Amziah King, written and directed by Andrew Patterson, is a neo-Western crime thriller film that premiered at the 2025 South by Southwest Film & TV Festival. The film centers around Amziah King, a beekeeper, a musician, and a general pillar of his community that attends potlucks and gives out jobs to those in need. After a young man named Colemar, a friend of King’s former employee Remick, has an accident involving a piece of King’s machinery, King must rush the young man to the hospital. Stopping by a diner after the incident, Amziah runs into his foster daughter Kateri, who is back in town after moving to a different foster family several years prior. The two reconnect, as King introduces Kateri to his band, shows her the beauty of music, takes her to a potluck, and reminds her of the art of beekeeping.
The film is full of southern charm, soulful banjo music, and beautiful cinematography. It presents a story about community, revenge, family, and business. While the first half of the film takes the audience on a slightly chaotic but heartfelt journey about Amziah and the community he surrounds himself with, the second half of the film takes a slight tonal and genre shift towards darker themes of revenge and justice after Amziah’s business is threatened by businessman Dob McCoy.
The film stars Matthew McConaughey as Amziah King, a gentle beekeeper who stands as a pillar of his community, Angelina LookingGlass as Kateri, Amziah’s foster daughter, and Kurt Russell as Dob McCoy, a businessman looking to buy King’s bee business. Rob Morgan plays Rippy, Amziah’s friend and lawyer, Tony Revolori as Colemar, a friend of Remick’s, and Cole Sprouse as Oat, a young man dealing in info who assists Kateri. Jake Horowitz plays Remick, a former employee of Amziah’s who befriends Kateri, and Bruce Davis plays Sunderland, a detective investigating Dob McCoy.
The Rivals of Amziah King is set to release in theaters August 21, 2026.
Barbarian (2022)
Barbarian, written and directed by Zach Cregger in his directorial debut, is a horror film intermixed heavily with comedic elements. The film is segmented into three main parts, each focusing on a separate character. It begins by focusing on Tess, a young woman who arrives at an Airbnb in an abandoned neighborhood in Detroit only to find someone else staying there – a young man named Keith. After a brief period of awkwardness and tension, Keith agrees to stay on the couch while Tess sleeps in the bedroom. However, after hearing noises from the basement and discovering a series of tunnels, Keith is put in mortal danger and Tess goes missing. The film then takes a brief genre and tonal shift towards AJ, an actor and the owner of the Airbnb who is alleged on a movie set to have committed sexual assault. Losing out on roles and money, AJ is forced to go to the Airbnb, where he finds Tess and Keith’s belongings strewn about and the entrance to the tunnels exposed. This section of the film takes a more comedic approach, as AJ measures the length of the tunnels in order to add it to the overall square footage of the house before selling it. The final separated section of the film focuses on Frank, the original owner of the house before AJ, as it delves into Frank’s crimes and the birth of the Mother.
The film stars Georgina Campbell as Tess, a young woman working on a documentary around Detroit, Bill Skarsgard as Keith, a young man found in the Airbnb Tess rented to stay at, Justin Long as AJ, the owner of the Airbnb, Matthew Patrick Davis as the Mother, a mysterious woman found in tunnels beneath the Airbnb, and Richard Brake as Frank, the original owner of the home and father of the Mother.

Weapons (2025)
Weapons, written, directed, produced, and co-scored by Zach Cregger, is a horror film intermixed heavily with comedic elements. The film is split into segments, each following a different main character. The film is centered around an entire elementary school class in Maybrook, Pennsylvania disappearing into the night at exactly 2:17 A.M., save for one student named Alex Lilly.
The film’s first segment focuses on Justine Gandy, the teacher of the missing class who receives the brunt of the blame and accusation surrounding the missing children. Justine is sent on administrative leave by the school principal Marcus, causing her to fall into a depression and relapse into alcoholism. During this stint, she sleeps with her ex Paul, a police officer, and follows Alex home amidst concern for his welfare. Upon reaching Alex’s home, she finds the windows are all covered by newspapers. The film then shifts perspective to Archer Graff, the father of one of the missing children named Matthew, who believes the situation isn’t being handled seriously by police. Taking the investigation into his own hands, Archer realizes based off of camera footage of the children leaving that they were converging on one location. The film then briefly focuses on the police officer Paul, who apprehends a homeless drug addict named James before letting him go. Finally, following James’ perspective, the film takes a slightly more comedic tone, as he attempts to burglarize Alex Lilly’s home and discovers the missing children hiding in the basement.
The film stars Josh Brolin as Archer Graff, the father of one of the missing children Matthew, Julia Garner as Justine Gandy, an elementary school teacher whose class went missing, Alden Ehrenreich as Paul Morgan, a police officer and Justine’s ex, and Austin Abrams as James, a homeless drug addict. Cary Christopher plays Alex Lilly, the only child from Justine’s class who doesn’t disappear, while Amy Madigan plays Aunt Gladys, Alex’s elderly relative. Toby Huss plays Ed Locke, the police captain and Paul’s father-in-law, while Benedict Wong plays Marcus Miller, the school principal.

Sorry to Bother You (2018)
Sorry to Bother You, written and directed by musician Boots Riley in his directorial debut, is a black comedy science fiction film. The film takes place in a slightly dystopian near future, where the company WorryFree provides jobs, a living situation, and food to those who work for them, which protesters campaign against as a version of present-day slavery.
The film follows Cassius “Cash” Green”, who takes a job at the telemarketer company RegalView to help pay rent for his uncle Sergio, as Cash is living there. Struggling at first to stay consistent with callers, Cash’s older coworker Langston tells him to use his “white voice”, in order to sound like he fully knows what he’s doing and isn’t trying to take advantage of callers. Cash finds success in using the white voice, leading him to quickly rise the ranks of RegalView. At the same time, Cash’s coworker Squeeze, alongside his fiancée Detroit and friend Salvador, who also work at RegalView, form a union alongside the rest of their floor to fight against RegalView and WorryFree, whom RegalView help with profits. They form a picket line outside RegalView, refusing to work until they are properly paid and covered. Cash gets a promotion from a normal telemarketer to the Power Caller floor, working under Mr. ____ and finding even more success. While this puts a rift between Cash and his friends, it does get him an invite to a party hosted by Steve Lift, WorryFree CEO. At the party, the film takes a shift from a slightly dystopian world with a quirky creative lens to its representation of phone calls, to a full science fiction horror show as it reveals Steve Lift mutating humans to create peak efficiency at WorryFree. This tonal and genre shift convinces Cassius to return to his friends, where he joins them in the fight against WorryFree and RegalView.
The film stars LaKeith Stanfield as Cassius “Cash” Green, a young African American man seeking employment and purpose in life, Tessa Thompson as Detroit, an artist who is also Cash’s fiancée, Jermaine Fowler as Salvador, Cash’s friend and coworker at RegalView, Omari Hardwick as Mr. ____, the head Power Caller at RegalView, and Terry Crews as Sergio Green, Cassius’ uncle who is struggling on rent. Danny Glover plays Langston, an older man working at RegalView and knowledgeable on what he calls “white voice”, Steven Yeun as “Squeeze”, a worker at RegalView who forms a union, and Armie Hammer as Steve Lift, the CEO of WorryFree. David Cross voices Cash’s “white voice”, Lily James voices Detroit’s “white voice”, and Patton Oswalt voices Mr. ____’s “white voice”.
