Jason Mamoa, who was set to star in Justin Lin’s Helldivers movie, has officially exited the project, as confirmed by The Hollywood Reporter. The film, based on the video game franchise of the same name, is still moving forward, with Fast and Furious director Justin Lin directing and Gary Dauberman, writer of It and Until Dawn, penning the script. Production of the film is being handled by Sony Pictures and PlayStation Productions. Producers of the film are Hutch Parker and Asad Qizilbash.
The Helldivers game series, consisting of the 2015 game and its sequel, Helldivers II, both developed by Arrowhead Studios, has collectively sold over 12 million units. The Helldivers movie was last teased during Sony’s panel at this year’s CinemaCon, after originally being revealed at last year’s CES. Details about why Momoa exited the project aren’t known at this time. It’s also not yet known who will be replacing him as the film’s lead. For now, the film is still scheduled to be released on November 10, 2027.
Mamoa can next be seen as Lobo in DC Studios’ Supergirl, and will appear in Street Fighter, releasing in October; Dune: Part Three, releasing in December; and in A Minecraft Movie Squared, due for release in March of 2027.
