A recent report by The Wall Street Journal revealed that a sequel to Monsters Inc. is in the works at Pixar. The film is set to be the third film in the Monsters Inc franchise, following the prequel, Monsters University, the spinoff/sequel series Monsters at Work, and of course the original Monsters Inc. Other details about the film, such as any returning cast or the director, weren’t revealed in the report.
The film was one of several included in the report, including Ono Ghost Market, an original story based on Asian mythology that centers around a bazaar where living and dead spirits interact, and an original animated musical from Turning Red director Domi Shi. These films join several others previously revealed to be in the works at Pixar. These include The Incredibles 3, which will be directed by The Good Dinosaur and Elemental director Peter Sohn, and is set for release in 2028. A sequel to 2017’s Coco has also been previously announced to be in the works.
This report comes soon after the release of Pixar’s original film Hoppers. Toy Story 5 is the next film after Hoppers to be released by Pixar, releasing on June 20th. Pixar’s next release after that is Gatto, an original animated film following a black cat in Venice, Italy, directed by Enrico Casarosa, set for release on March 4, 2027.
Pixar’s Hoppers is currently in theaters.
