Kathryn Hahn is reportedly in negotiations to play Mother Gothel in Disney’s upcoming live-action adaptation of Tangled. The Studio star is no stranger to the Disney family, having recently portrayed the villain Agatha Harkness in Marvel Studios’ Agatha All Along.
The original 2010 Tangled animated film starring Mandy Moore and Zachary Levi follows Princess Rapunzel, whose magically long, blonde hair possesses healing powers. Raised in isolation within a hidden tower, Rapunzel dreams of freedom and eventually escapes with the help of a charming outlaw. Mother Gothel, voiced by Donna Murphy in the animated film, kidnaps Rapunzel to exploit her powers in order to maintain her youth and beauty.
According to Deadline, Scarlett Johansson was previously in talks to portray Mother Gothel, but ultimately exited the project due to scheduling conflicts stemming from her roles in Batman II and The Exorcist reboot.
The film will be directed by Michael Gracey, who most recently directed the Robbie Williams biopic Better Man. Jennifer Kaytin Robinson penned the screenplay, while rising stars Teagan Croft (Titans) and Milo Manheim (Zombies) were announced as cast members on January 7.
Kristen Burr is producing through Burr! Productions, with Lucy Kitada serving as executive producer.
Hahn recently received an Emmy nomination for her role in Apple TV+’s The Studio, as well as a Golden Globe nomination for Agatha All Along.
