While there is still some time from its release, Guillermo Del Toro’s newest feature, a brand new spin on Frankenstein, is generating plenty of buzz. One aspect that has circulated regarding the film is its switch in actors set to portray the monster.
Originally lined up to play Frankenstein’s Monster was Andrew Garfield, who would’ve been appearing opposite Oscar Isaac’s Dr. Frankenstein.
According to ScreenRant, Garfield had to step away from the project before shooting got off the ground due to scheduling conflicts. The conflicts themselves came about due to the SAG-AFTRA strike that took hold in 2023.
Following Jacob Elordi picking up the role when Garfield had to depart, he spoke about the switch.
While talking to Deadline, Garfield expressed his remorse over not being able to play the part, saying he was a big fan of Del Toro and the creative team he had put together on the film.
However, he also mentioned how he recently spoke to Elordi, and their conversation helped put the situation into perspective for him.
“But meeting Jacob felt serendipitous so that I could see and hear that, ‘No, maybe he needed that experience more than me.’ That was cool to feel that he had a spectacular time on that job,” Garfield said.
With appearances in The Amazing Spider-Man and The Social Network under his belt, Garfield recently appeared alongside Florence Pugh in this year’s We Live In Time by director John Crowley.
