Among some of the recent additions to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, a new announcement has been made that brings back a familiar face for fans of the franchise. Chris Evans, who played Captain America, is set to return in Avengers: Doomsday.
Evans was responsible for playing the character since 2011’s Captain America: The First Avenger. Following the events of that film, Captain America became a key player in the MCU, with his role rivaling that of Robert Downey Jr’s Iron Man in terms of importance.
Chris Evans’ time as Steve Rogers would draw to a close with 2019’s Avengers: Endgame, the film that served as the climax to the Infinity Saga. Similarly, it would mark the end of Robert Downey Jr.’s time as Iron Man as well, until just a few months ago when he was cast as Doctor Doom.
Hollywood Reporter noted that it’s not explicitly stated that Evans will return to the MCU as Captain America. While most widely recognized as him in terms of superhero flicks, Evans did appear as the Human Torch in the 2005 Fantastic Four, as well as its sequel.
Human Torch did appear once again in this year’s mega-hit Deadpool & Wolverine, with Chris Evans reprising his role, leaving the likelihood of his playing that character not entirely off the table.
Avengers: Doomsday will bring back directing duo Joe and Anthony Russo. The pair originally boarded the MCU with Captain America: The Winter Soldier, and would go on to direct Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame. Returning with them as well is writer Stephen McFeely, who has worked with them on their previous MCU projects, and also as a writer on all three films of the Captain America trilogy.
Avengers: Doomsday hits theaters May 1st, 2026.
