After holding the top spot since its release date, Barbie has finally been dethroned as the number one box office earner. The newest adventure from DC, Blue Beetle, has claimed the top spot for the weekend.
On track to bring in $25-$27 million, the Latino-led film is still opening behind what it estimated. Initially, it was on its way to $28-$32 million for the weekend; now, Blue Beetle is currently looking down the barrel of one of the lowest openings for a film belonging to the DCEU with what it’s brought in, including a $10 million Friday and $3.3 million in previews.
Blue Beetle marks the first time a live-action superhero flick has been built around a Latino character and cast. Xolo Maridueña stars as the titular hero, alongside Adriana Barraza, Damían Alcázar, and George Lopez, among many others. With an average breakdown of 30% Latinos in the crowd, according to Hollywood Reporter, a poll from PostTrack suggests 40% of the audience was Latino this weekend.
Barbie may have lost out on the top spot, but its successful streak continues to exceed expectations. The film is looking at a $20-$21 million, or even higher, domestic weekend, giving it second place overall. Also in its fifth weekend, the historical film Oppenheimer is pulling up third alongside Barbie. It’s looking to pass $700 million worldwide, making it Christopher Nolan’s fourth biggest film.
The battle for fourth and fifth place are between a group of raunchy dogs and four teenage turtles. The newly released comedy from Universal, Strays, pulled in a lackluster $8.3 million, resulting in a battle with the animated Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem for the fourth spot at the box office.
