According to The Hollywood Reporter, Bad Boys For Life directors Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah have signed on for a Batgirl movie reportedly set for an HBO Max release. Similarly to other DC comics characters, a solo Batgirl film has been in development for a while now. Originally Joss Whedon was going to write and direct, but left because he could not find the story for the movie. However, akin to the rest of the DC projects over at Warner Bros, this picture is finally gaining some production steam.
Arbi and Fallah have gotten a lot of buzz as of late. After one of the only successful feature runs of 2020, due to the pandemic, the duo is set to direct an episode of Ms. Marvel for Disney and will also be directing the fourth installment of Beverly Hills Cops. The directing duo is certainly attracted to action films and this Batgirl film looks to be no different.
The Batgirl in this movie will likely be the most well-known iteration of the character: Barbara Gordon. Gordon is the daughter of police Commissioner Jim Gordon. She has been in various forms of media over the years whether that be as Batgirl or a slightly different alter ego as Oracle. Barbara Gordon has most recently appeared in the Harley Quinn animated TV series on HBO Max.
It is unknown if this solo film will tie into Matt Reeves’ Batman, but if it is like anything else DC and Warner Bros have been doing it will be decent and could-maybe-possibly-who-knows be connected to the other movies.
As of now there is no set production or release date for Batgirl.
