MOVIE REVIEW: ‘Misty Green’

Misty Green tells the story of an older, talented actress trying to pull off a Hollywood comeback while struggling with addiction, toxic habits, and family chaos. Overall, I’d give the movie 2 stars, though I think it actually has plenty of potential if it were expanded into a TV series instead.

The first half of the movie was interesting. I found the scenes of Misty walking into an audition room, especially when it was being held by a person who has an antagonistic attitude, were amazing and the scenes with her talent manager were very on par and showed the roughness and uncertainty in trying to reach for the stars.

The main issue for me was the second half. The film couldn’t seem to focus on one plotline, and a lot of the story felt confusing or shoehorned in—like the scenes with the Black police officer and her brother, which felt a bit forced. I also wished they had shown more of her past both with her brother, best friend and how it felt to be a top tier star with sky the limit dreams. I also found Chris’s character to be trying too hard with the “Black’s taking space and not being put down.” I felt it could’ve been shown better as it is a fair point of struggle in Hollywood and the entertainment industry as a whole.

That said, the main actress’s performance was fantastic. Rosalind Eleazar gave a standout lead performance playing a character who is aggressive and argumentative, but still deeply vulnerable. She leads with a great star-studded cast, and a few of her scenes, especially the ones with Anna Kendrick(who played her best friend) and Adam Driver(her playmate) really hit right for me. It was satisfying to watch her character finally break free from her toxic lifestyle by the end.

2 out of 5 stars.
