Amidst the lineup of film festivals that are underway, the Zurich Film Festival is about to begin later on in the week. 2024’s installment, however, is looking to be scaled back in comparison to years prior.
The film lineup this year was cut down significantly, only showing just over 100 films, compared to its nearly 150 films from last year. Variety points out that the cutbacks are due to the German-Language Focus Competition being removed from the usual slate.
The main two competitions that the fest boasts are now contained to feature films and documentary films.
Variety also noted that the Zurich Film Festival will be showing The Order, a film that stars Jude Law play an agent who delves deeper into a string of crimes that he discovers to be plotted by a group of terrorists set on toppling the US government.
The screening of the film coincides with the Golden Eye Award being given to Jude Law. This year, the Golden Eye Award will also go to Alicia Viklander and Pamela Anderson.
The annual Lifetime Achievement Award this year will go to Emil Steinberger. Past recipients of this award include Paul Schrader in 2021, Donald Sutherland in 2018, and Michael Keaton in 2009.
The other award the festival will bestow is that of the Career Achievement Award. This year, it’s being given to Howard Shore, who has composed many film scores over the years. He’s responsible for scoring the new film from David Cronenberg, The Shrouds, and has worked with Cronenberg on many of his films in the past. Some of his other iconic works include Hugo, Silence Of The Lambs, and even the Lord Of The Rings trilogy.
