Zombieland 2 is officially returning with the original cast Jesse Eisenberg (Batman v Superman), Emma Stone (La La Land), Woody Harrelson (Solo: A Star Wars Story), and Abigail Breslin (Scream Queens). This film is aiming for an October 2019 release with returning director Ruben Fleischer (Venom) and original scriptwriters Paul Wernick and Rhett Reese.
The original Zombieland was a post-apocalypse horror comedy film released in 2009. The film is about a college kid trying to survive the zombie apocalypse and meeting three strangers on his way seeking a sanctuary. It was both a critical and commercial success. In fact, it made $102.4 million against a $23.6 million budget, making it the top-grossing zombie film in the United States until World War Z in 2013.
Although Sony Pictures did not release the budget for this film yet, it must be more than the original Zombieland. In the past 9 years, all the actors have reached a new level of fame and all became Academy Awards nominees, with Emma Stone winning the Academy Award for Best Actress in the musical La La Land (2016). Harrelson became more and more popular after starring in True Detective, The Hunger Games franchise and Solo: A Star Wars Story. Eisenberg starred in major films like The Social Network and Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.
Zombieland 2 will continue to focus on comic mayhem, with the people getting more and more into the America heartland while facing evolved zombies and encountering other human survivors. But the crux will be dealing with the increasing pain of their snarky, makeshift family.
