Zach Snyder has confirmed that his upcoming Netflix space opera Rebel Moon will be released as two movies, with several cuts to each part. Originally the film was to be released in only one part, but due to the lengthy time of the original film, Netflix and Snyder decided it would be best to split it up.
In an interview with Vanity Fair, Zach Snyder’s co-producer and wife Deborah Snyder states that the script was originally 172 pages with a runtime of roughly three hours. Deborah also talks about the behind the scenes discussions between Zach and Netflix Chairman Scott Stuber.
Zack said, ‘If you ask me to make this less than two hours, I’m going to lose all the character. You won’t care about these people. It’s a character story about how people can change, and redemption, and what are you willing to fight for…’ So [Stuber] said, ‘What if I give you two movies?’
The first part of Rebel Moon will be released on Netflix on December 22. While the second part does not have a released date yet, Zach Snyder stated that it wouldn’t be a long wait in between chapters.
Netflix can do things that a traditional studio can’t do as far as how close together the movies are released.
Zach explains how each installment has a different feel. The first chapter is a light watch “that anyone can enjoy and watch.” While the second part, Zach feels is more designated for his fans.
I think for fans of mine and people who are ready to take a deeper, harder dive, that’ll be fun for them.
The story will follow a mysterious young woman, played by Sofia Boutella, who is set out to find warriors from the neighboring planets to save her peaceful colony from obliteration from the armies of Regent Balisarius
The cast will include Charlie Hunnam, Djimon Hounsou, Anthony Hopkins, Doona Bae, Ray Fisher, Stuart Martin, Cary Elwes, Corey Stoll, Michiel Huisman, Alfonso Herrera, Ed Skrein, Cleopatra Coleman, Fra Fee, Rhian Rees, Jena Malone, E. Duffy, Charlotte Maggi, Sky Yang and Staz Nair.
