Zach Cregger, known for horror films such as Barbarian and Weapons, is directing the upcoming Resident Evil reboot. Production for the film began in early October and is currently shooting in Prague. Recently, photos were leaked on X showing streets covered in blood and a bleak, snow-covered version of the infamous setting from the original video game series, Raccoon City. The photos reveal torched cars and blood-stained snow covering the streets, indicating a chilling winter backdrop.
The images also show a “Martin County” Sheriff’s SUV with Colorado license plates, suggesting that the film’s Raccoon City is set in a likely real-world location, unlike the more ambiguous setting in the video games. Adding to the city’s environment is a bus stop featuring a map and subway information.
Prague officials have closed off several streets to facilitate filming. Locals report that nighttime sequences involving high-speed chases, gunfire, and other vehicle stunts have recently been shot.
Cregger has explained that the film will center around a new narrative within the Resident Evil universe. He described the project as “very Zach.” Cregger often blends suspense and social commentary into his narratives and uses low-key lighting and unique cinematography to create a dreadful atmosphere and tension. While Resident Evil will be Cregger’s first adaptation, his version of the video game will combine elements from the games while telling a new story. He hinted that his adaptation is more influenced by the atmosphere of Resident Evil 4 but set within the worlds of Resident Evil 2and 3. Although Cregger is a fan of the video games, he has not seen any of the previous Resident Evil films.
Austin Abrams leads the cast, alongside Paul Walter Hauser, Zach Cherry, Kali Reis, and Johnno Wilson. The reboot is set to be released on September 18, 2026.
