We Are Your Friends, starring Zac Efron (That Awkward Moment) as aspiring DJ Cole Carter, takes all the well-known themes of making it big in the LA music scene—partying, hustling, selling out, etc.—and transfers them to the world of electronic dance music. In director and co-writer Max Joseph’s first feature film, he shows audiences what it actually takes to become a successful DJ (hint: a lot of hard work).
The film also stars Jonny Weston (Project Almanac) and Shiloh Fernandez (Evil Dead) as members of Cole’s crew, as well as Emily Ratajkowski (Gone Girl) and Wes Bentley (The Hunger Games).
In line with the old adage “don’t quit your day job,” We Are Your Friends explores the grueling process of turning one’s passion into a paying career, which is something many people can relate to. Besides that, the trailer sees Efron breaking down the science behind the perfect EDM song to get a dance floor started, which may have you second-guessing your party habits from here on out.
Warner Bros. will release We Are Your Friends in theaters on August 28.
