Fox’s newest comedy, Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates, just picked up Zac Efron (That Awkward Moment) as one of its leads, The Hollywood Reporter confirms. Scripted by Neighbors writers Andrew J. Cohen and Brendan O’Brien, the story will follow two brothers who post and online ad looking for wedding dates. It is slated for a July 29, 2016 release.
Although this initially sounds like the gender-reverse of The Wedding Date rom-com, it will more likely involve less impressive dates and more raunch, if its writers are any indication. Director Jake Szymanski will be making his debut for a feature film, having formerly directed shorts for the comedy website “Funny or Die.”
Efron has recently been on the rise in the comedy world, starring in two highly grossing comedic films last year– Neighbors and That Awkward Moment. He is also currently filming the comedy Dirty Grandpa alongside Robert De Niro (Meet the Parents). Efron will also play a DJ in the EDM drama We Are Your Friends, and will be producing several projects currently through his Ninjas Runnin’ Wild Productions– including the John Grisham novel adaptation The Associate.
